Sim2Real Transfer of Reinforcement Learning for Concentric Tube Robots

    Get PDF
Concentric Tube Robots (CTRs) are promising for minimally invasive interventions due to their miniature diameter, high dexterity, and compliance with soft tissue. CTRs comprise individual pre-curved tubes usually composed of NiTi and are arranged concentrically. As each tube is relatively rotated and translated, the backbone elongates, twists, and bends with a dexterity that is advantageous for confined spaces. Tube interactions, unmodelled phenomena, and inaccurate tube parameter estimation make physical modeling of CTRs challenging, complicating in turn kinematics and control. Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has been investigated as a solution. However, hardware validation has remained a challenge due to differences between the simulation and hardware domains. With simulation-only data, in this work, domain randomization is proposed as a strategy for translation to hardware of a simulation policy with no additionally acquired physical training data. The differences in simulation and hardware forward kinematics accuracy and precision are characterized by errors of 14.74±8.87 mm or 26.61±17.00 % robot length. We showcase that the proposed domain randomization approach reduces errors by 56 % in mean errors as compared to no domain randomization. Furthermore, we demonstrate path following capability in hardware with a line path with resulting errors of 4.37±2.39 mm or 5.61±3.11 % robot length

Semiautonomous Robotic Manipulator for Minimally Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement

    Get PDF
Aortic valve surgery is the preferred procedure for replacing a damaged valve with an artificial one. The ValveTech robotic platform comprises a flexible articulated manipulator and surgical interface supporting the effective delivery of an artificial valve by teleoperation and endoscopic vision. This article presents our recent work on force-perceptive, safe, semiautonomous navigation of the ValveTech platform prior to valve implantation. First, we present a force observer that transfers forces from the manipulator body and tip to a haptic interface. Second, we demonstrate how hybrid forward/inverse mechanics, together with endoscopic visual servoing, lead to autonomous valve positioning. Benchtop experiments and an artificial phantom quantify the performance of the developed robot controller and navigator. Valves can be autonomously delivered with a 2.0±0.5 mm position error and a minimal misalignment of 3.4±0.9°. The hybrid force/shape observer (FSO) algorithm was able to predict distributed external forces on the articulated manipulator body with an average error of 0.09 N. FSO can also estimate loads on the tip with an average accuracy of 3.3%. The presented system can lead to better patient care, delivery outcome, and surgeon comfort during aortic valve surgery, without requiring sensorization of the robot tip, and therefore obviating miniaturization constraints.</p

The Effect of Ta'zir Goals on the Rules of Plurality of Crimes

plurality of crime is a special situation in which a person has committed several crimes before a final conviction, and Lawyers have expressed different views on the rules of plurality of crime. the regulation of criminal institutions cannot be independent of the goals of the criminal response. The present article is a descriptive-analytical study using documentary sources. This study answers the question of how the plurality of crime is affected by the goals of ta'zir and creates a new rule? Since the main goal in ta'zir is correction, and in addition to correction, compensation for the damage is also considered. Criminal talent should also be considered in the process of correction.it is also necessary to pay attention to criminal motives. Therefore, in committing crimes, if the motives are similar, they will interfere and will be limited to just one ta'zir. And if the motives are dissimilar, any motive independent of the other motive is the subject of ta'zir, and the plurality of motives will cause the plurality of ta'zir reactions. Unless the goal is achieved by applying an appropriate ta'zir,in which case the causes will interfere. In cases where the purpose of ta'zir is compensation, the plurality of victims will lead to the plurality of ta'zir, even if the motive is the same.in order to provide the Victims' interests, a reaction must be adopted in the light of which the perpetrator's correction is also achieved

BackgroundAutonomous navigation of catheters and guidewires in endovascular interventional surgery can decrease operation times, improve decision-making during surgery, and reduce operator radiation exposure while increasing access to treatment.ObjectiveTo determine from recent literature, through a systematic review, the impact, challenges, and opportunities artificial intelligence (AI) has for the autonomous navigation of catheters and guidewires for endovascular interventions.MethodsPubMed and IEEEXplore databases were searched to identify reports of AI applied to autonomous navigation methods in endovascular interventional surgery. Eligibility criteria included studies investigating the use of AI in enabling the autonomous navigation of catheters/guidewires in endovascular interventions. Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA), articles were assessed using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2). PROSPERO: CRD42023392259.ResultsFour hundred and sixty-two studies fulfilled the search criteria, of which 14 studies were included for analysis. Reinforcement learning (RL) (9/14, 64%) and learning from expert demonstration (7/14, 50%) were used as data-driven models for autonomous navigation. These studies evaluated models on physical phantoms (10/14, 71%) and in-silico (4/14, 29%) models. Experiments within or around the blood vessels of the heart were reported by the majority of studies (10/14, 71%), while non-anatomical vessel platforms “idealized” for simple navigation were used in three studies (3/14, 21%), and the porcine liver venous system in one study. We observed that risk of bias and poor generalizability were present across studies. No procedures were performed on patients in any of the studies reviewed. Moreover, all studies were limited due to the lack of patient selection criteria, reference standards, and reproducibility, which resulted in a low level of evidence for clinical translation.ConclusionDespite the potential benefits of AI applied to autonomous navigation of endovascular interventions, the field is in an experimental proof-of-concept stage, with a technology readiness level of 3. We highlight that reference standards with well-identified performance metrics are crucial to allow for comparisons of data-driven algorithms proposed in the years to come.Systematic review registrationidentifier: CRD42023392259

© 2017 Sadati, Naghibi, Shiva, Noh, Gupta, Walker, Althoefer and Nanayakkara. Continuum manipulators have gained significant attention in the robotic community due to their high dexterity, deformability, and reachability. Modeling of such manipulators has been shown to be very complex and challenging. Despite many research attempts, a general and comprehensive modeling method is yet to be established. In this paper, for the first time, we introduce the bending effect in the model of a braided extensile pneumatic actuator with both stiff and bendable threads. Then, the effect of the manipulator cross-section deformation on the constant curvature and variable curvature models is investigated using simple analytical results from a novel geometry deformation method and is compared to experimental results. We achieve 38% mean reference error simulation accuracy using our constant curvature model for a braided continuum manipulator in presence of body load and 10% using our variable curvature model in presence of extensive external loads. With proper model assumptions and taking to account the cross-section deformation, a 7-13% increase in the simulation mean error accuracy is achieved compared to a fixed cross-section model. The presented models can be used for the exact modeling and design optimization of compound continuum manipulators by providing an analytical tool for the sensitivity analysis of the manipulator performance. Our main aim is the application in minimal invasive manipulation with limited workspaces and manipulators with regional tunable stiffness in their cross section.UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), European Union H2020 project FourByThre
